Need for Speed đã trở lại sau 1 năm vắng bóng kể từ phiên bản 2015. Tiếp tục được phát triển bởi Ghost Games, phiên bản mang tên Need for Speed Payback lần này quyết định đi theo phong cách thiên về hành động với những pha takedown và những trường đoạn đậm chất Fast & Furious thường thấy ở The Run hay Rivals chứ không quay về với nguồn gốc của series như đã từng làm ở phiên bản reboot.
